You can book a South Georgia holiday from the months of November to March, as the island is closed off for the remainder of the year due to heavy snows and extreme temperatures. The island is only accessible by smaller expedition ships that carry visit permits. 

The best time to book a South Georgia small group tour is between January to February, and November to December. This is the perfect time as the temperatures are at the warmest, reaching an average of 8° celcius. These months are also great for wildlife viewing as the penguin population is at its peak, and albatrosses are visible and swim in the open seas.

South Georgia is known as the world’s most important breeding site for seabirds. It’s home to over 10 million birds, and has 78 different bird species. This includes a variety of penguin species such as king penguins, macaroni penguin, magellanic penguin and the rock-hopper penguin. South Georgia is also famous for the wandering albatrosses, elephant seals and reindeer. 

History
South Georgia’s history is fascinating, being home to ancient whaling stations and even the grave of the famous explorer, Sir Ernest Shackleton. South Georgia residents have been using the whaling stations since 1904, and since they stopped in the 1960’s, penguins have inhabited the space.
